There are concerns about the impact the widespread use of scented products may have on the environment. The materials used in fragrance are volatile organic compounds and readily enter the air. Once in the air they contribute to both indoor and outdoor pollution. Much of scented products such as toiletries, cleaners, and laundry products end up going down the drain. Fragrance materials are not removed by waste water treatment and end up in rivers and streams.
